The most common cause of roof staining is Gloeocapsa Magma, an algae. The algae feed on the limestone in the asphalt shingles and spread over the roof causing the black streaks.This algae is fairly harmless and easy to treat. However if left to grow it can degrade your shingles UV protection and turn into Lichen. The Lichen holds moisture in place against surfaces, which speed up the deterioration of your shingles. When the moisture freezes it could cause frost damage leading to your shingles to bend and warp over time.
